Soy Candle Wax
The soy candle wax is actually just a recent invention. Although candle making has been around for thousands of years, this particular form of candle processing is quite new as it involves a more modern approach to candle making. However, it is important to know that there are still no officially established beneficial effects of soy wax candles, and that labeling of these products is not regulated. Soy wax candle manufacturers have no claims to medical advantages and preference of use is solely left to the consumer. However, this doesn't mean that it has more hazards than the other standard candles out there. Rather, recent studies even suggest that there are some significant benefits to its use. If you're here to learn more about this topic, then this article will serve to educate you about the soy candle wax.
Definition
The soy wax candle is made from a partially-hydrogenated form of soybean oil called soy wax. In usual combinations of this process, it has a lower melting point temperature, and is generally softer than paraffin wax. Because of this lower melting temperature, they're usually created as container candles and even as pillar candles because some manufacturers put in other additives to further increase the melting point. This is particularly important since a lower melt point means that it has almost zero chances of these candles deforming during unpleasantly heated temperature (in other words, hot weather).
Inception
It was around 1991 when a candle maker, by the name of Michael Richards, who was looking for an alternative to traditional candle making in terms of cost production, began experimenting with hundreds of different mixes of vegetable oils and plant waxes. In 1992, he succeeded in creating the original formula for the soy candle wax, in which he was able to successfully blend natural waxes with vegetable oils and other domestic and tropical plant oils. However, Richards didn't stop there and continued experimenting with other processes. It was only after a few years later when he came back to his original work and perfected the soybean formula that his invention got the attention it so rightly deserved.
Breakthrough
In 1995, Michael Richards began replacing his candle products that contained almond oil with soybean oil. He further experimented with other processes to reduce the cost of making his early soy wax candles that in 1996 he was able to manufacture various designs of high melting point and low melting point candles. It became a breakthrough and people started getting interested.
Success
The soy candle wax invention then became a successful hit. In 2001, a company named Cargill purchased the IP rights (Intellectual Property rights) of Michael Richard's soy wax candle formula. They began experimenting with it and started modifying the soy candle to groom it for further mainstream commercialization. Since then, the soy wax candle has become part of the traditional candle making process and more and more manufacturers are creating them to decrease the cost of production. Although other ingredients and materials are being added to the original formula, the soybean oil is still being included.
Nowadays (and technically speaking), for a candle to be called a soy candle wax, it has to contain at least 25% soybean oil. Michael Richards has indeed started a new trend. Who knows? Maybe the soy candle wax will even supplant other traditional candles.

Soy Candle Making Supplies
Soy candles and soy candle making supplies are in popular demand today and are very trendy. They are safer and healthier to use for candle making than most other types of candle waxes. Soy candles are less expensive to make than are paraffin and beeswax candles, which is another benefit of using soy candle making supplies.
Soy made candles are made of course from soybeans, it is not harmful like other petroleum bases of wax. It is also easier on those who enjoy having candles around yet suffer from allergies or respiratory conditions. They are also 100% biodegradable, which means that soy candles are more environmentally friendly.
The candle making equipment and supplies you will need to make your own soy candles are not so much different from the supplies and equipment that you use for making paraffin candles. However, you may wish to purchase a set of candle making equipment especially for making your own soy candles at home. This is helpful and cuts down on crossing the various types of candle waxes you are using.
The various types of soy candle making supplies that you will need for making soy candles include:
- Soy Wax
- Candle Wicks
- Candle Molds
- Candle Dye Additives
- Candle Fragrance Additives
You will also require the standard equipment for candle making such as a stove with a double broiler or the use of a candle wax-melting machine. It is good practice to use a candy or candle thermometer while you are making soy candles. You will require a 2-cup glass-measuring cup or any container that is heat and fire resistant and a few stir sticks as well as any type of container you plan to use for your soy candles.
Other soy candle making supplies you may find useful includes a measuring scale so you can weight the amount of soy wax that you will need to complete your candle-making project. For measurements that are more accurate, you may wish to invest in the use of a digital measuring scale.
As you can tell, the supplies and equipment you may use while making your own soy candles are not so different from the items you use while working with various other types of candle wax. The supplies you need are not so hard to find and most often readily available to you in your household cupboards.
Once you get use to the process of making your own soy candles, you will be thrilled with the results you can get. The added bonus of being healthier to use than some other types of candle waxes makes soy candle making a worthwhile project. However, always follow the candle making directions and practice sensible safety while making and using your own soy candles.
Soy candle making supplies are essential when you want to make your own candles, whether you make them for your own use, plan them as gift giving items or even if you want to run your very own candle making home business. Regardless of the types of candles, you plan to make with your candle making projects you should always try to use the best quality of soy candle making supplies. Doing so will enhance the experience of your candle making as well as the results of they soy candles that you make.

Materials
Before you go about making oil candles, you'll need to have the right materials. Here are some of them:
- You're going to need some cooking oil.
- You'll need wicks. You can't complete a real candle without a wick to light it. You can choose to make some wicks out of cotton balls with a toothpick inside.
- You're certainly going to need a lighter. How else are you going to light your oil candle?
- Fragrance oil is also something you might need. Get a lot of varieties just in case you need it.
- You're also going to need jars or bottles as your wax containers. These are, in effect, the candle containers that will be used. You can use some glass bowls but make sure that they don't easily break.
Steps
Here are the 3 steps to oil candle making:
- Begin by pouring the oil into the jar, bowl, or some other container (either glass or light metals). You can choose to use some aluminum tin cans but make sure that they're reliable. If you find that you're having a hard time, just get a conventional container that's dependable.
- Add some fragrance oil if you like. Mix and stir according to your preference. The more the amount of fragrance oil you use, the more potent your candle scent will be.
- Gently place the wicks inside the container. Push the wicks with the needle but leave a good half-inch jutting out of the wax. If you're using a cotton ball, compress the cotton as best as you can and pull a pinch from it and then soak it into the oil inside the container.

How to Make Beeswax Candles
When you make beeswax candles, you have two different ways how to make beeswax candles. The first method on how to make beeswax candles is the old-fashioned way, dipped candles. The second is more modern and a whole lot simpler. You simply roll a wick soaked in beeswax and dried straight into a sheet of beeswax. If you're working with younger children, rolled beeswax candles are the best. Children old enough to work around the stove, about third to fourth grade, will enjoy learning how pioneers made their candles.
Old Fashioned Dipped Candles
Even though the appearance is not as fancy as a rolled candle made the modern way, you'll probably appreciate the dipped candles more for their unique quality. If you have a local farmer that raises bees for honey, you'll find they have the wax for sale and it still has the sweet scent from the contents. This makes a dipped candle even more desirable.
You'll need a pan and a tall can. A large baked bean can or juice can works well. You'll use the pan and can as a substitute double boiler. You need long wick material, something to hang your candles over as they dry and between dips, metal washers, a thermometer and scissors. Don't forget to cover the floor. This is a messy job. Newspapers work well if you tape them down. You could call this the dip and drip method of candle making.
Simply put the beeswax into the can as you heat the water. Keep the beeswax temperature at around 145 degrees. Never let it go up to 190 degrees as it could catch fire. Don't melt the beeswax in a microwave either. Pyrex containers can't take the heat that beeswax sustains and there's a big possibility of the wax exploding, besides breaking your glass dish. Of course, if you're using a metal pan that adds double jeopardy to the mix.
Cut the wick longer than the can where you'll dip it. You'll need enough wick to hand onto as you dip the first few times, enough to tie the washer to so the wick remains straight when you dip and when you're letting it dry, after about 2 to four passes, enough to tie to another dipped candle so it can hang over a pole. Tie the metal washer to the bottom of the wick. Dip it into the melted wax, bring it out quickly, give some airtime and dip again. After the first four to five dips, let it hang for a while as you begin two more candles. You'll need to dip it around 25 to 30 times, depending on how thick you want it. After you let it dry by hanging, cut off the washer from the bottom. The wick should be stiff enough to hold straight.
Rolled Candles
There is absolutely nothing simpler than rolling your candle. Preschoolers can do this, with a little help.
You'll need scissors, wax sheets, a container to melt the wax to cure the wicks, wicks, wax paper and a clean area to work.
Cut the wicks slightly longer than your wax sheet. Before you start, give the wicks a little stiffness by soaking them in melted beeswax pieces and laying them straight on wax paper to cool. Once the wicks harden place one along the edge of the wax sheet, press it into place and then start to roll your candle. When you finish, press the edge down to seal the candle. Voila, you've made a beeswax candle with no fuss whatsoever. You finished the lesson on how to make beeswax candles the rolled method. Now you know how to make beeswax candles two different ways.
