It became a breakthrough and people started getting interested.

Success

The soy candle wax invention then became a successful hit. In 2001, a company named Cargill purchased the IP rights (Intellectual Property rights) of Michael Richard's soy wax candle formula. They began experimenting with it and started modifying the soy candle to groom it for further mainstream commercialization. Since then, the soy wax candle has become part of the traditional candle making process and more and more manufacturers are creating them to decrease the cost of production. Although other ingredients and materials are being added to the original formula, the soybean oil is still being included.

Nowadays (and technically speaking), for a candle to be called a soy candle wax, it has to contain at least 25% soybean oil. Michael Richards has indeed started a new trend. Who knows? Maybe the soy candle wax will even supplant other traditional candles.

How to Make Beeswax Candles

When you make beeswax candles, you have two different ways how to make beeswax candles. The first method on how to make beeswax candles is the old-fashioned way, dipped candles. The second is more modern and a whole lot simpler. You simply roll a wick soaked in beeswax and dried straight into a sheet of beeswax. If you're working with younger children, rolled beeswax candles are the best. Children old enough to work around the stove, about third to fourth grade, will enjoy learning how pioneers made their candles.

Old Fashioned Dipped Candles

Even though the appearance is not as fancy as a rolled candle made the modern way, you'll probably appreciate the dipped candles more for their unique quality. If you have a local farmer that raises bees for honey, you'll find they have the wax for sale and it still has the sweet scent from the contents. This makes a dipped candle even more desirable.

You'll need a pan and a tall can. A large baked bean can or juice can works well. You'll use the pan and can as a substitute double boiler. You need long wick material, something to hang your candles over as they dry and between dips, metal washers, a thermometer and scissors. Don't forget to cover the floor. This is a messy job. Newspapers work well if you tape them down. You could call this the dip and drip method of candle making.

Simply put the beeswax into the can as you heat the water. Keep the beeswax temperature at around 145 degrees. Never let it go up to 190 degrees as it could catch fire. Don't melt the beeswax in a microwave either. Pyrex containers can't take the heat that beeswax sustains and there's a big possibility of the wax exploding, besides breaking your glass dish. Of course, if you're using a metal pan that adds double jeopardy to the mix.

Cut the wick longer than the can where you'll dip it. You'll need enough wick to hand onto as you dip the first few times, enough to tie the washer to so the wick remains straight when you dip and when you're letting it dry, after about 2 to four passes, enough to tie to another dipped candle so it can hang over a pole. Tie the metal washer to the bottom of the wick. Dip it into the melted wax, bring it out quickly, give some airtime and dip again. After the first four to five dips, let it hang for a while as you begin two more candles. You'll need to dip it around 25 to 30 times, depending on how thick you want it. After you let it dry by hanging, cut off the washer from the bottom. The wick should be stiff enough to hold straight.

Rolled Candles

There is absolutely nothing simpler than rolling your candle. Preschoolers can do this, with a little help.

You'll need scissors, wax sheets, a container to melt the wax to cure the wicks, wicks, wax paper and a clean area to work.

Cut the wicks slightly longer than your wax sheet. Before you start, give the wicks a little stiffness by soaking them in melted beeswax pieces and laying them straight on wax paper to cool. Once the wicks harden place one along the edge of the wax sheet, press it into place and then start to roll your candle. When you finish, press the edge down to seal the candle.
