How To Choose The Right Wax To Use

When you are learning how to make your own candles you will need to determine which type of candle making wax your will use. You can choose from various assortments of candle making wax. The differences in the wax you choose to use will depend largely on your choice of the types of candles you wish to create.

The various types of waxes you can use include, natural, tallow, soy, palm, beeswax, bayberry, paraffin, gel, oil, and others that are newer synthetic bases blends on the market today. These various waxes are derived from such things as the byproducts of animals, vegetables, petroleum, as well as other artificial compounds.

Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum; this means it undergoes a process of refining. It is solid when at room temperature. It has a melting point between 120 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit. It is classifiable as either, slack wax, scale wax, semi-refined wax or fully refined wax. Slack and scale waxes give off an oil scent, they are most useful while making jar and container candles.

Semi-refined and refined waxes are available as either straight wax or blended wax. You may wish to use straight wax while creating your own special blends of candle wax to use for your candle making projects. You can use this type of wax to make such candle types as container, jar, or tin filled candles, votives, pillars, tapers, figurines and other novelties. Blended wax is available with the necessary additives included with the exception of any type of coloring or fragrance you wish to include while making candle-making wax for your own candles. They are well suited for making tapers, pillars, votive and jar candles.

Another type of candle wax that is very popular today is that of gel candle wax. Gel wax has a mineral oil base. It is useful for making a world of creatively bubbly and dazzling see-through candles. This type of candle wax is clean burning without excessive smoke. Gel also holds more fragrant scents than paraffin wax will.

However, while making gel candles, you should always make sure that any glassware containers you may choose to use should be thick enough to withstand the heat from a burning flame. Do not choose thin glassware for your candlemaking projects as this can be harmful if the heat from the candle flame causes the too thin glass container to burst.

Of course, there are various other types of candle waxes from which you can choose while shopping for candle making supplies.
